Campaigners welcome plans to strengthen maternity services
10 June 2008

Campaigners fighting to save maternity services at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath have warmly welcomed plans set out by NHS Trust Chief Executive Duncan Selbie to strengthen maternity services at the PRH.

In his weekly message, Mr Selbie sets out plans to send a clear message to the public at the PRH’s maternity service remains open for business. The Brighton & Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust plan to invest in ten more midwives for the PRH and recruit a fifth permanent consultant for the unit. The Trust will also create a single consultants’ rota across the PRH and Royal Sussex County in Brighton in order to maintain clinical cover across both sites.

Campaigners believe these plans send a strong message about the maternity unit’s future, despite plans agreed by the West Sussex Primary Care Trust to downgrade the unit.

Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames says: “I strongly welcome this investment in the PRH’s maternity services. From discussions I have had with him, I know that Duncan Selbie is committed to maternity services at the PRH and these improvements can only improve the quality of care available to expectant mothers in Mid Sussex”.
