Angry scenes at public meeting as residents shut out
4 October 2007

Around 200 residents were shut out of a recent health authority public meeting in Haywards Heath after hundreds of people tried to pack the meeting to voice their opposition to the downgrading of services at the PRH. The Primary Care Trust had arranged the meeting in a hall which had a capacity of less than 400.

Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames left the meeting to address the angry crowd and told Chief Executive John Wilderspin: "It's a pity you couldn't find anywhere bigger to accommodate them".

The meeting also heard from Newick GP Herry Ashby who announced the opposition of 180 GPs against the downgrading plans - local clinicians who represent around 300,000 patients.

Cllr Christopher Snowling, from Mid Sussex District Council, told the meeting: "On the Department of Health website there is a statement which indicates what is needed is a genuine, patient led NHS, but I can't see too much of that behind the consultation".

A further public meeting will be held by the Primary Care Trust at Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill on 18th October from 7-9pm.
