Midwives' protest pushes the message forward
8 September 2007

Midwives from the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath have staged a bed push through Haywards Heath town centre to highlight the campaign against the downgrading of A&E and maternity services being proposed by West Sussex Primary Care Trust.

The event was held as part of Haywards Heath town day, with around a dozen midwives pushing a hospital bed through the town as part of the parade organised by the Town Council. The campaign has also begun to distribute thousands of car stickers to residents concerned about the proposals.

Victoria Hersey, who was pushed on the bed through Haywards Heath with her daughter Beatrice, recently gave birth under the care of midwifes at the Princess Royal Hospital. She said: “Both of my children were born under the care of the PRH’s maternity unit. I’m very concerned that these changes would put the lives of mothers and babies at risk”

A statement from the midwives involved in the bed push said: “We have a wonderful maternity unit at the PRH providing excellent care. We care passionately about our women and their safety. We want to be able to provide the best possible care for women in Mid Sussex which will not exist if the maternity unit is closed”

Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames, who attended the event, added: “This has been a wonderful effort by the campaign on town day, with the tremendous support from the midwives who came up trumps with their bed push. There is no doubt that health administrators need to pay attention to the staunch local support for the PRH”

Over 65,000 local residents have now signed the petition launched by local Members of Parliament against the proposals.
