24-hour vigil for the PRH - 9th & 10th December
10 December 2006

Around 1,000 people have braved cold weather in Haywards Heath to attend a 24-hour vigil in support of the Princess Royal Hospital. The vigil was held to continue the campaign against any threatened downgrading of Accident & Emergency and maternity services at the hospital.

As well as showing a strong message of support for the PRH, local residents were asked to come and light a candle for the hospital and fill in a postcard to Candy Morris and John Wilderspin, the NHS Chief Executives making decisions about changes to hospital services, to explain people's opposition to any loss of services.

Just over 850 postcards were filled in during the weekend, which members of the campaign team will present to John Wilderspin at a meeting on Wednesday.

Commenting about the health authority proposals at the launch of the vigil, Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert said: "this week, a rear-guard attempt by the Prime Minister to suggest that actually what this was about was the modernisation of healthcare; we might have expected him to use that word. But actually, what this is, it's going to improve facilities because we're going to have new facilities closer to the communities. I would just like to know how much closer to a community can you get than this, it's a nonsense"

During the weekend, vigils were also held in Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings and Chichester for other hospitals under threat in Sussex.
